About My Work
I work in clay because of the permanence it offers. It is a
strong medium that will last for generations. As a
collector of vintage pottery, I have always been curious about the creators of the pieces I collect. Relating to each piece collected, I feel a connection with its creator. I aspire to have my pieces connect with people in this permanent way. There can be so much ugliness in the world; I want my creations to add beauty.
My original designs are inspired by the beauty of nature. My
work process is done in the tradition of the Arts & Crafts Movement and I am involved with every part of the creative process. For the very dimensional tile pieces, a clay model is made and from that model, a mold is poured. For the more delicate images, a design is carved directly onto a plaster blank. Each tile is then pressed, one at a time, from the mold. After the
first firing the tiles are decorated with rich, hand-mixed glazes and fired at least once again. Each stoneware tile is presented in a custom hardwood frame. My intention is to create each tile as lasting piece of art that will grace the home of the collector for many years to come.
